BerGSAS-DAAD Scholarships In Germany (Fully Funded)

Are you targeting a fully funded DAAD PhD scholarship in Germany? The DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) 2026 at the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS) is now open for applications. From October 2026 to September 2030, this international doctoral fellowship funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers exceptional early-career researchers full financial support to pursue cutting-edge research in archaeology, ancient languages, visual culture, theology, and related fields.

Hosted jointly by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Freie Universität Berlin, BerGSAS provides a vibrant academic environment in the heart of Europe’s archaeological research hub. Research Tracks & Eligible Fields

1. Ancient Languages and Texts (ALT)

Focus: Philology, digital humanities, linguistics

Fields: Ancient History, Greek, Latin, Coptic, Near Eastern languages, Egyptology, Protestant Theology, Comparative Linguistics

2. Ancient Objects and Visual Studies (AOViS)

Focus: Archaeological artifacts, visual culture, image communication

Fields: Classical & Near Eastern Archaeology, Egyptology, Oriental Studies

3. Landscape Archaeology and Architecture (LAA)

Focus: Geo-statistical methods, architectural analysis, landscape studies

Fields: Prehistoric & Classical Archaeology, Egyptology (landscape focus)

Scholarship Benefits

Eligibility Criteria

  • Non-German citizen
  • Master’s degree completed (or by 1 March 2021)
  • No continuous residence in Germany since before 1 December 2024
  • Not previously awarded a PhD
  • English proficiency: B2 (C1 for FU Berlin tracks)

  1. Register on the BerGSAS portal and complete eligibility questionnaire
  2. Submit Documents by 15 October 2025:
    • Degrees & transcripts (BA & MA)
    • Research proposal
    • CV
    • Proof of English proficiency
    • Two recommendation letters (sent by referees to [email protected])
  3. Stage 1: Online shortlisting & interview invitation
  4. Stage 2: Final selection by DAAD & university admission
