About the Scholarship

Makerere University proudly announces a total of 190 Undergraduate Scholarships and 11 Master’s Scholarships for the Academic Year 2025/2026. Funded through the Mastercard Foundation, these scholarships not only cover tuition fees but also provide comprehensive support that empowers scholars to build a better future for themselves and their communities. The program is specifically tailored for students who have demonstrated leadership potential and community service, making it a launchpad for future changemakers.

Who Can Apply?

For Undergraduate Degree Programmes:

To be eligible for the undergraduate scholarship at Makerere University’s main campus, applicants must:

Apply for Admission: Ensure you have applied under the Private Sponsorship Scheme for the academic year 2025/2026.

Educational Qualifications:

Completed advanced secondary level education (or equivalent) in an African country; or
Hold a second-class/credit diploma from a recognized institution; or
Passed the mature age entry examinations for Makerere University in 2023 or 2024.

Financial Need: Must be experiencing financial hardships.

Scholarship Exclusivity: Must not hold any other scholarship, including the Government of Uganda Scholarship.

Academic Status: Must not have completed an undergraduate degree program.

Leadership & Community Service: Demonstrated potential in leadership and community involvement.

Age Limits:

General category: Applicants should be 28 years old or younger at the application deadline.
Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and Students with Disabilities: Applicants should be 32 years old or younger.

Documentation for Refugees: Must hold a valid Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation, or in the case of Refugee Host Communities, have completed secondary school education within those communities.

Program Priority: Must apply for one of the degree programs prioritized under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.

For Master’s Degree Programmes:

To be eligible for the Master’s scholarship, applicants must:

Apply for Admission: Submit an application for admission to Makerere University’s main campus for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Educational Qualifications: Must have completed undergraduate education in an African country.

Financial Need: Must be experiencing financial hardship.

Scholarship Exclusivity: Must not hold any other scholarship and must not be pursuing or have completed any Master’s degree studies.

Leadership & Community Service: Demonstrated potential in leadership and community service.

Age Limits:

General category: Applicants should be 35 years old or younger.
For Refugee and Students with Disabilities categories: Applicants should be under 40 years old.

Documentation for Refugees: Must hold a valid Refugee Identity Card or Family Attestation.

Program Priority: Must apply for one of the prioritized degree programs under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
