ADB-JSP Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the ADB-JSP Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship:
    • Must be a national of an ADB borrowing member country. (Note: Applicants from countries no longer borrowing from ADB are not eligible.)
  • Academic Background:
    • Hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a superior academic record.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Have at least two years of full-time professional working experience acquired after completing a university degree.
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English to successfully pursue studies.
  • Age Limits:
    • Generally, applicants should not be more than 35 years old at the time of application. For programs suited to senior officials and managers, the age limit can be extended to 45 years old in exceptional cases.
  • Health and Commitment:
    • Be in good health and agree to return to your home country upon completion of your studies.
  • Exclusions:
    • Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff of ADB, their consultants, and relatives are not eligible.
    • Staff of AIT or those living/working in a country other than their home country are also ineligible.
    • Applicants already enrolled in a graduate degree program or those pursuing undergraduate studies, distance learning, short-term training, or research projects are not eligible.

Required documents

  • Applicants must prepare the following documents in PDF format for the online application:
  • Academic Documents:
    • Copy of your Bachelor’s degree certificate and a transcript of the four-year undergraduate program.
  • Language Proficiency Scores:
    • Valid scores from approved tests (e.g., IELTS-Academic with a minimum of 6 in writing and overall, AIT EET ≥ 6.0, or TOEFL ≥ 550).
  • Professional Documentation:
    • Work certificate provided by your employer.
  • Income Verification:
    • Your latest Income Tax Return or Certification of your Annual/Monthly Salary.
    • If married, include your spouse’s income statement; if not, provide a parent’s income statement.

Financial coverage

The ADB-JSP Scholarship offers extensive financial support, which includes:

  • Tuition Fees:
    • Coverage of all actual costs, including registration and graduation fees.
  • Housing:
    • Coverage is based on actual dormitory housing costs or an agreed allowance for appropriate off-campus housing.
  • Subsistence and Allowances:
    • A flat subsistence allowance (including housing) disbursed monthly.
    • A flat student medical and accident insurance allowance.
    • A flat allowance for books.
  • Travel Expenses:
    • Economy class air travel costs for the most direct route between the DI and the scholar’s home country.
    • A flat allowance for miscellaneous travel-related expenses (visa fees, airport taxes, luggage allowance, etc.).
    • Excess luggage expenses up to 20 kg during return travel (actual costs).
  • Thesis/Research Allowance:
    • A flat allowance to cover research expenditures such as photocopying, supplies, and local travel costs.
  • Additional Training:
    • In special cases, funding may be provided for additional language or computer literacy training if necessary (actual costs).

Note: The scholarship does not cover expenses for family members, extra-curricular courses, additional travel beyond the scope of the degree, supplementary educational materials, or equipment purchases like computers.

    • ADB reviews the submissions and recommends awardees based on the established selection criteria. The Executive Director of Japan gives the final formal approval.
  6. Notification and Acceptance:
    • AIT will notify all applicants of the outcome. Successful candidates will be required to sign an Acceptance of Scholarship Award, agreeing to return to their home country after completing their studies.
