The Edinburgh Futures Institute is proud to announce the opening of calls for our prestigious Visiting Fellowship program, set to begin in the 2025/26 academic year. This initiative offers a vibrant academic environment where visiting fellows can engage with a diverse group of researchers affiliated with the Futures Institute, industry partners, and students. Fellows can participate in seminars, events, and training courses, creating a truly enriching experience.
The Edinburgh Futures Institute is committed to challenging conventional thinking, fostering creativity, and driving change. Our mission is to address today’s complex issues by uniting diverse disciplines and perspectives to create better futures. We focus on six key research areas:
- Creative Industries & Digital Humanities
- Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence
- Financial Services & Fintech
- Future Infrastructure
- Public Sector: Prevention, Data Civics, Participatory Democracy, Governance
- Tourism & Festivals
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a permanent position within an academic institution at the time of their visit, though equivalent professional qualifications and relevant experience will also be considered. Applicants must be external to the University of Edinburgh.

We particularly welcome applications from individuals based in LMICs (low- and middle-income countries) and underrepresented minorities. We seek candidates who:
- Are working on projects related to our key research areas.
- Have expertise or have led projects in these areas, with a visit to the Futures Institute likely to enhance their work.
- Plan to develop a grant proposal, benefiting from a visit to the Futures Institute.
Assessment Criteria Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Demonstrable leadership in research and engagement, commensurate with career stage.
- Existing research links with academic sponsors and the broader Edinburgh ecosystem.
- The societal relevance and impact potential of the proposed research.
- Plans to actively engage with and contribute to the Futures Institute and the wider Edinburgh academic community.
Fellowship Length and Terms
Fellowships are expected to last between 3 to 6 months, aligning with an academic semester. Fellows are required to contribute to the local research community through guest lectures, seminars, grant proposal collaborations, or teaching contributions.
Successful applicants will receive up to £1,500 per month for relocation costs, along with travel and visa cost reimbursements, if applicable. Additional support is available for applicants from LMICs.

Academic Sponsorship
Applicants must secure an academic sponsor from the University of Edinburgh to act as their primary point of contact and supporter during their visit. The sponsor will provide a statement of support as part of the application process.
Detailed information about academic sponsorship is available below. The application deadline is midnight (GMT) on 23 January 2025, with successful applicants notified by the end of February.
