2. Student Exchange Support Program (Short-Term Study)

  • Monthly Stipend: 80,000 yen
  • Duration: 8 days to 1 year
  • For exchange students studying under official inter-university agreements

Eligibility Criteria

For Privately Financed International Students

  • Student residence status required
  • GPA of 2.30+ in the previous academic year
  • Language proficiency:
    • JLPT N2 or EJU 200+
    • OR English proficiency CEFR B2+
    • (Language requirements not needed for preparatory or Japanese language institutions)
  • Monthly personal funding below 90,000 yen
  • Dependents’ annual income below 5 million yen
  • Must not receive another conflicting scholarship
  • Must agree to JASSO academic career tracking surveys

Application Procedure

1. Apply Before Coming to Japan (Reservation Program)

For students taking the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students):

Inside Japan: Select “Apply” in the scholarship reservation section on the EJU application.

Outside Japan: Mark “〇” in the scholarship field of the EJU form.

If selected, students become Reservation Holders and receive the scholarship after entering a Japanese university.

2. Apply After Arriving in Japan

Contact the international office of your university

Institutions screen eligible students and recommend them to JASSO

Quotas vary by university (some may not accept applications each year)

3. Exchange Program Applicants (Study in Japan Under Agreement)

Apply through your home university

Only available for students participating in an official exchange program with a Japanese institution
