Toronto University Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) In Canada (Funded)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program is a prestigious scholarship program offered by the Government of Ontario, Canada to support and encourage excellent full-time graduate students in their academic pursuits. The scholarship is awarded to students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree at a publicly funded Ontario university.

The OGS program, a prestigious Canadian scholarship, supports and fosters academic excellence in graduate studies at publicly-assisted universities in Ontario. Established in 1975, the OGS scholarship has been awarding merit-based grants to top graduate students in all fields of study.

The University of Toronto is among the many universities in Ontario that offer the OGS program, with funding provided jointly by the Province of Ontario and the University. The Province determines the number of OGS awards each university can offer to its students each year.

Value & Duration

The value of the OGS is $5,000 per session. Thus, awardees may receive $10,000 for two consecutive sessions or $15,000 for three consecutive sessions. In all instances, the awarding graduate unit will contribute to one-third of the cost of the total award received by the students.

Each scholarship is tenable for one year (i.e., two consecutive or three academic sessions). The value and duration of each OGS award will be determined by the awarding graduate unit and detailed in the offer letter.

Eligibility to Hold an OGS Award

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a highly sought-after scholarship in Canada for international students. In order to hold an OGS award, recipients must meet the following eligibility criteria:

Full-time enrollment at the University of Toronto in an eligible graduate program.

Must remain enrolled throughout the award period. Students who withdraw, transfer to part-time status, or fail to complete the full session will be required to repay the funds received.

Good standing with the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Students who have defaulted on a Canada or Ontario Student Loan or failed to make satisfactory repayment are ineligible for the award.

Research assistantships, part-time teaching positions, or other paid employment is allowed as long as it does not affect full-time student status and is in line with graduate unit policies. Full-time paid employment typically disqualifies students from receiving an OGS from the University of Toronto.

Cannot hold an OGS award while also holding a scholarship from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, QEII-GSST, or another OGS.

Please note that these eligibility requirements are the minimum standards only. Each graduate unit may have additional criteria for applying, receiving, or holding an OGS award. It is recommended that students inquire with their graduate unit for any additional requirements.

How To Apply

To apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), prospective students must submit an application to their proposed graduate unit via the centralized online OGS application platform provided by the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies. Each graduate unit will have its own internal deadline, which applicants must adhere to. Before applying, applicants should carefully review the OGS Application Instructions.

Once the application is completed and submitted online, it will be reviewed and considered by the proposed graduate unit.

It is important to note that OGS awards are non-transferable between universities or graduate units at the University of Toronto. Therefore, students must submit separate OGS applications to each graduate unit they are seeking admission to at the University of Toronto and to each Ontario institution if applying to multiple universities. Each institution will have its own unique OGS application process.

International students holding a valid study permit by the graduate unit’s international application deadline are eligible to apply and follow the same application process and internal deadlines set by their current or proposed graduate unit. The graduate unit will select and forward a limited number of applications to the School of Graduate Studies for centralized adjudication.
