University Malaya (UM) Bright Scholarship is a full scholarship program created to identify and recruit outstanding candidates (citizens and non-citizens) from leading educational institutions around the world to pursue a Doctoral Degree (PhD) in research mode at Universiti Malaya ( UM).
Through this program, UM aims to achieve the following:
Bring together the most outstanding and talented individuals from across the globe and produce PhD graduates capable of bringing about a positive impact on the world; Increase research output through the production of quality publications;
Strengthen academic collaborative research networks by leveraging on connections made possible by UM Bright Scholarship recipients; and Increase UM’s global visibility by attracting the best PhD candidates from top universities.

Scholarships Benefits
- Stipend: RM3,500/month for a period of 42 months
- Fee waiver throughout 7 semesters
- Any payment involving the preparation of agreement documents, preparation of passports, insurance, visas, flight tickets, medical examinations, and accommodation is NOT borne by the University.
Fields Of Study
The field of study must be within the 10 UM thrust areas.
The University Management reserves the right to determine any appropriate field for the scholarship offer based on the merits of each case.

Eligibility Criteria
The applicant’s age must not exceed 30 years in the year of application.
Minimum academic qualification required to apply are as follows:
- a) Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA >3.70 (or other recognized equivalent qualification); and
- b) Master’s degree by research; or Master’s Degree through mixed mode (coursework and dissertation)with honors and a CGPA of at least 3.70/4.00.
Non-citizens must have the following English language qualifications:
- a) IELTS (Academic) with a score of at least 6.5; or
- b) TOEFL 73-93; or
- c) CEFR B2
Note: The validity of the English test is within 2 years from the date of the exam.
The applicants must not be a recipient of any sponsorship/scholarship from any other organization or party.

Application Procedure
Complete the form and attachments required as follows
- Passport size photo
- Completed UMES application form
- Proof of publication (first page only)
- Copy of Applicant’s Identity Card
- Copies of certificates and academic transcripts of the Bachelor’s Degree level
- Copies of certificates and academic transcripts at the Master’s Degree level
- A valid IELTS/TOEFL/CEFR certificate that is no more than 2 years from the
- date of the examination.
Save the completed form and attachments in pdf format. Label the file as “<>UMBrightS<>”
