2026 Research Focus Areas: AI and Sustainability

The UNESCO Keizo Obuchi Fellowship supports innovative, high-quality, and interdisciplinary research. For the 2026 cycle, proposals must align with one of the following priority areas, with a heavy emphasis on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development:

1. Heritage Conservation and Management
2. AI for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Climate Action

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

Applicants must:

• Be Nationals of Invited Member States: Your country must be listed among the invited nations in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, or specific European states (Türkiye and Ukraine). See the full list below.

• Academic Qualifications: Hold at least a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a field relevant to the proposed research and demonstrate strong research potential.

Fellowship Grant and Eligible Costs

Selected fellows will receive a lump-sum grant of up to US$10,000. This grant is intended to cover essential costs related directly to the approved research stay in Japan.

What is covered:

• International and domestic airfare.
• Accommodation.
• Medical insurance (arranged by UNESCO on the fellow’s behalf; cost is deducted from the grant).
• Personal subsistence (meals, local transport, incidental expenses).
• Other applicable research-related expenses.

What is NOT covered:

• University tuition fees.
