PLAAS Master’s and Doctoral Scholarships, and Post-Doctoral Fellowships In South Africa

Application is invited to apply for South African Research Chair in Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) Master’s and Doctoral Scholarships, and Post-Doctoral Fellowships. Scholarships are available to join Professor Hall’s program.

While scholarships will cover fees and living costs, the Chair also provides access to funds for other study-related costs, including others: equipment, fieldwork, and participation in conferences. A key criterion for selection of students will be the fit between their interests and abilities and the focus of the program.

Selected candidates will participate in studies under the supervision of Professor Hall and must participate in activities such as research projects, theory and method workshops, as well as intensive reading groups.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for PLAAS scholarships and postgraduate scholarships in South Africa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must demonstrate the contribution of their proposed research project to the program as a whole and specifically to one of the lines of work covered by the scholarship.
  • Candidates for master’s scholarships must have obtained a relevant bachelor’s degree from recognized universities with good grades.
  • Applicants for doctoral scholarships must have obtained a relevant master’s degree from a recognized university.
  • Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership, academic and research potential.
  • Applicants must be willing to abide by the rules governing student conduct at the University of the Western Cape.

Required Documents

  • an online UWC application for 2020 studies*,
  • A brief concept note outlining the proposed research (two pages
  • or less),
  • Your full CV,
  • Your academic transcripts,
  • A South African Qualifications Authority certificate for those with foreign qualifications,
  • A sample of your academic writing (e.g. a chapter from a Master’s
  • thesis),
  • The names of three academic referees,
  • A letter of motivation.
